Filmverdenen kommer til Sørfonds pitcheforum

Sør-Afrikas største korrupsjonsskandale, kampen om en kveg-ranch i Venezuela og ettervirkningene av en tyfon på Filippinene – det er noen av filmprosjektene norske produsenter inviteres til å coprodusere under Sørfonds pitcheforum. Nytt av året er et fagseminar om å coprodusere med Kina.

Den åttende utgaven av Sørfonds pitcheforum vil bli arrangert den 13. november på nye Vega Scene i Oslo.

Seks prosjekter fra Venezuela, Sør-Afrika, Kurdistan (Irak), Jordan, Myanmar og Filippinene skal presenteres for et publikum av norske produsenter. Som alltid er dette meriterte regissører og produsenter som ofte har vunnet prestisjetunge internasjonale priser.

Foruten filmskaperne som kommer for å presentere sine prosjekter, er det lagt opp til en fagdel med fokus på co-produksjon med og distribusjon i Kina. Dessuten vil det bli kunngjort oppdateringer i fondets retningslinjer: Fra og med neste søknadsfrist for Sørfond-støtte i mars, vil søknadene gå gjennom en pre-seleksjon før de sendes til juryen. Prosjekter som er valgt ut til pitcheforumet vil gå direkte videre fra denne pre-seleksjonen.

De siste årene har det kinesiske markedet også blitt interessant for norske produsenter, og Sørfond har invitert to kinesiske gjester som skal holde foredrag om co-produksjon og distribusjon med og i Kina. Liang Ying, produsent og tidligere salgsagent for Chinese Shadows (nå med eget selskap) skal holde et foredrag om co-produksjon med Kina. Dette er et foredrag hun også holdt på MEDIA-standen under årets Cannes-festival. Mens Jing Xu, distributør for REDiance, vil snakke om distribusjon av kinesiske filmer internasjonalt og av utenlandske filmer i Kina.

Regi: Shawkat Amin Korki  Produsent & Co-produsent: Shawkat Amin Korki & Mehmet Aktaş (Mitos Film)

Prisvinnende regissør, kjent for bl.a. Kick Off og Crossing the Dust. Produsent og medforfatter Mehmet Aktas er kjent for bl.a. Gulîstan – Land of Roses, Før snøen faller og Brev til Kongen.

Rojeen (20) has already failed twice the admission exam for university in Erbil, Iraqi Kurdistan. Since her father wants her to marry if she fails again, Rojeen and her beloved sister Shilan (24) try to find ways to cheat the exam. That is how suddenly they find themselves in a conflictual circle of a corrupt educational system.

Prosjektet ble valgt ut blant de offisielle prosjektene på Asian Project Market i Busan.

The Women (Myanmar)
Regi: The Maw Naing . Produsent: Youngjeong Oh

Produsent Youngjeong Oh har skrevet manus sammen med regissør The Maw Naing. Naing har laget en rekke kortfilm og hans langfilmdebut The Monk ble vist  på festivaler verden over, blant annet i Rotterdam, Karlovy Vary, Locarno og Singapore. The Women er Naings andre film.

Mi Thet (19) moves to the big city from her small village to get a job. She finds works in a garment factory and accommodation in a small dormitory room with three other young women – Sa Phay (23) who work in the same factory, Khin Su (23) who work in a hotel, and Ei Lay (14) who work as maid in the house of one of the country’s powerful ex-generals. Despite working hard and keeping their hopes high, they can’t escape from poverty. Though not familiar with each other, their lives are connected through sharing the small place at the dormitory. From their present, we see their past and future.

Prosjektet ble valgt ut blant de offisielle prosjektene i Open Doors Hub i Locarno. Prosjektet vant også Vision Sud-Est Award på 35 000 CHF (ca. 290 000kr) på samme festival.

The Alleys (Jordan)
Regi: Bassel Ghandour Produsent: Rula Nasser

Produsent Nasser har co-produsert bl.a. The Last Friday, My Love Awaits Me by the Sea. Regissør Ghandour var medforfatter og produsent på festivalhitten og publikumssuksessen Theeb – Ulven. The Alleys blir hans spillefilmdebut som regissør.

In a claustrophobic East Amman neighbourhood, where life is dictated by gossip and violence, ALI, a hustler who pretends to be a white-collar career man, has a secret relationship with Lana, a young college student. Their romance is kept hidden until one day Lana’s mother, Aseel, receives an extortionist video of the young couple getting intimate. Hoping to avoid public embarrassment, Aseel discreetly convinces Abaas, a ruthless gangster, to put a stop to it… but things don’t go so smoothly. Their lives start to intertwine and collide not just with each other, but with the other residents living amongst the same Alleys.

Prosjektet ble valgt ut blant de offisielle prosjektene ved Dubai Film Connection 2017. Prosjektet vant også Cinescape/Front Row Award på $10,000 på samme festival.

How To Steal a Country (Sør-Afrika)
Regi: Rehad Desai & Mark Kaplan Produsent: Zivia Desai

Regissør Desai er kjent for dokumentarene Giants Must Fall og Miners Shot Down. For sistnevnte vant Desai Emmy-pris for beste dokumentar. I How To Steal a Country undersøkes Sør-Afrikas største korrupsjonsskandale noensinne, the Gupta-leaks.

When Indian émigré brothers Atul, Ajay and Rajesh Gupta bet on Jacob Zuma, they bet on the rising star in South Africa’s ruling ANC party. Within just a few years of Zuma becoming the country’s president, the Guptas and Zuma’s son are multi-millionaires off the back of dodgy contracts from state owned enterprises. A rags to riches story filled with political influence, corruptible politicians and a host of well-known multinationals prepared to benefit from state capture

Whether the Weather is Fine (Filippinene)
Regi: Carlo Fransisco Manatad Produsent: Armi Rae Cacanindin Co-produsent: Vincent Wang (Frankrike)

Produsent Cacanindin deltok i Torino Film Lab med prosjektet og vant der TFLs Co-Production Award. Co-produsent Wang har produsert filmer som Oblivion Verses og The Ornithologist. Regissør Manatad har jobbet lenge som filmklipper på en rekke store filippinske prosjekter. Hans kortfilmer har blitt vist på en rekke internasjonale festivaler som Locarno, Busan, Kortfilmfestivalen i Grimstad og Semaine de La Critique i Cannes. Whether the Weather is Fine blir Manatads spillefilmdebut.

In the aftermath of Typhoon Haiyan, religious fanatics, desperados, criminals and fleeing animals are loose in the city. Miguel, a desperate son, roams the ruins in search of the two women in his life: his girlfriend Andrea and his mother, Norma. As soon as he finds these two important women in his life, Miguel tries to convince them to leave the unliveable city. However, Norma is fixated on waiting for her estranged husband Luis and Andrea is entangled in rebellious acts paving the way for her to commit the unspeakable. As Miguel’s time slowly runs out as another rumor of an incoming storm resurfaces, his freedom and even his life are jeopardized. He must decide whether to stay on to persuade his loved ones or to leave town on his own before the next disastrous storm devours him and the only home he knows.

Deeper / HONDO (Venezuela)
Regi: Virginia Urreiztieta. Produsent: Natalia Machado

Produsent Machado er kjent for blant annet Sørfond-støttede La Familia, som hadde premiere i Cannes og er Venezuelas Oscar-kandidat. Regissør Urreiztietas forrige kortfilm Gas Station ble produsert av James Franco og hennes eksamensfilm PANORAMA fikk hederlig omtale av juryen i 2016 på kortfilmfestivalen Clermont-Ferrand. Deeper / HONDO blir hennes spillefilmsdebut.

Deep into the Venezuelan plains, Elena (35) and her daughter Anick (16), spend their days commanding a cattle ranch. Elena suffers from «demons» and after enduring a life filled with suffering, she has decided to die. One morning, Anick discovers a dead cow. Apparently, a hungry beast has been killing the cattle in the ranch. Meanwhile, the people using the political instability to invade properties have started to close in on their land. Secretly, Elena has arranged the sale of her property, but Anick discovers her plan and opposes her. In turn, Elena dares her to catch the tiger. Anick, resentful of her mother’s indifference towards their lives and their land, decides to go after it and finish off the beast.
