Screen International omtaler filmen som “an intriguing tale of lost souls and found redemption that could provide a unique change of pace for specialty cinemas and home screens. The Painter and the Thief suggests, human relationships are complex and multidimensional things. And whenever you foolishly start to try to contain them in a simple frame, they stubbornly burst out”.

“Incredible. That’s the word that comes to mind with Benjamin Ree’s “The Painter and the Thief,” a stranger-than-fiction friendship story in which vérité techniques produce unbelievable results. I don’t mean to imply that this astonishing documentary isn’t truthful. Rather, I’m in awe of how things played out, and fully aware that there was a certain amount of manipulation — not necessarily of the facts, but certainly in the way they’re presented — required to produce the cinematic equivalent of a cubist portrait, in which an artist and her unlikely muse are made to overlap, revealing unexpected dimensions of one another over time…”

“To get the desired emotional reaction, “The Painter and the Thief” proves able to deceive in ways that are best discovered for yourself. It works: In a genius final stroke, Ree pulls back to reveal the entire canvas, putting key aspects of this unconventional portrait into startling new perspective.”

“The film’s sustained intimacy speaks highly of the trust the subjects came to feel for the filmmaker, who is able to cut to the quick as he follows and reveals their life phases while also maintaining a filmmaker’s discreet distance. It’s an unusual look at the slipperiness of the human condition.”

Også IndieWires kritiker lar seg fascinere:

“The Painter and the Thief” plays into a number of common socio-economic assumptions — Ree, Kysilkova, and the audience are all complicit in a power imbalance that positions Nordland as the unthinking object of their gaze and/or control — the film is most compelling for how it complicates that dynamic, levels the playing field, and leans into the aesthetics of suffering.
