Ruben Östlunds The Square er nominert til en Oscar for beste ikke-engelskspråklige film.
Den svenske vinneren av Gullpalmen og en rekke EFA-priser har holdt en høy profil siden den internasjonale premieren på forsommeren 2017. Flere av de øvrige filmene i denne kategorien er vist på norske kinoer eller festivaler, som Ildiko Enyedis On Body and Soul, Andrey Zvyagintsevs Loveless og Sebastian Leilos En fantastisk kvinne. I tillegg er også libanesiske The Insult av Ziad Doueiri nominert.
Den norske dokumentaren Kayayo av Mari Bakke Riise var blant ti filmer som konkurrerte om de fem nominasjonene til Oscar for beste kortdokumentar. Men filmen nådde ikke opp. Det gjorde den danske filmen De sidste mænd i Aleppo av Feras Fayyad som er nominert for beste dokumentarfilm.
