Guillermo del Toros kritikerroste The Shape of Water tok hjem de to gjeveste Oscarprisene under nattens utdeling i Los Angeles – for beste film og beste regi. Samtidig fikk filmen prisen for beste produksjonsdesign og beste orginalmusikk. Filmen var tidlig blitt utpekt til en favoritt, sammen med Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri, og med Call me by your name og Get Out som dark horses i oppløpet.

Det er ikke ofte en fantasy/horrorfilm vinner de gjeveste prisene, men Guillermo del Toro har status i Hollywood som en unik filmkunstner som uanstrengt kan overskride tradisjonelle sjangergrenser.

Det ble likevel ikke noen pris på Sally Hawkins for hennes mye roste hovedrolle i The shape of water. Prisen for beste skuespiller gikk til favorittene Frances McDormand, Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri  og Gary Oldman, Darkest Hour.

Ruben Östlund måtte dra hjem uten pris for beste ikke-engelskspråklige film – den gikk til chilenske En fantastisk kvinne.
