Ifølge IMDb skal Tomas Alfredson (mesterverket La den rette komme inn) regissere The Danish Girl med Nicole Kidman. Kidman skal spille Einar Wegener, den aller første personen i verden som gjennomgikk en kjønnsskifteoperasjon. Ryktene vil ha det til at Charlize Theron skal spille kona, Greta. Filmen er basert på romanen (fra 2000) med samme navn, skrevet av David Ebershoff. Slik blir boken beskrevet på hjemmesiden til forfatteren:
