Sju norske filmprodusenter har fått tilskudd til samproduksjon med produsenter i andre land gjennom Sørfond. «Hvert av disse modige prosjektene står som et vitnesbyrd om filmskaperes motstandskraft», mener juryen som har valgt ut prosjektene.

Årets tilskudd går til ni produksjoner fra Etiopia, Rwanda, India, Jordan, Thailand, Kina, Indonesia, Filippinene og Palestina (Vestbredden og Gazastripen), melder Sørfond i en pressemelding. Juryen har valgt ut én dokumentarfilm og åtte spillefilmer som til sammen mottar 5 425 000 kroner i støtte.
Sørfond ble etablert for å fremme filmproduksjon i land der denne er begrenset av politiske, sosiale eller økonomiske årsaker. Kvalifiserte land er fastsatt av DAC-listen, som er utviklingskomiteen til OECD sin liste over land som kan motta bistand.
Sørfond gir tilskudd til spillefilm eller dokumentarfilm produsert av hovedprodusent i DAC-land og norsk minoritetsprodusent. Regissøren må være statsborger av, eller bosatt i, et land på DAC-listen. Filmen må i hovedsak spilles inn i et land som står oppført på denne listen.
Årets Sørfond-jury bestod av filmskaper Wanuri Kahiu (Kenya), filmkonsulent og produsent Sophie Bourdon (Frankrike), og prosjektleder i Sørfond, Mads Wølner Voss. De har blant annet følgende å si om utvalget:
«Vi lever i en tid der ytringsfrihet og menneskerettigheter er under umiddelbar trussel over hele verden. Hvert av disse modige prosjektene står som et vitnesbyrd om filmskaperes motstandskraft – og om håpet kunsten kan gi for fremtiden. Å støtte disse historiene på ulike måter bidrar til Sørfonds kjerneformål: å styrke ytringsfriheten og menneskerettighetene, fremme kvinners rettigheter, støtte film som en form for kulturelt uttrykk, og å kjempe for kunstnerisk frihet og kulturelt mangfold».
Sørfond er finansiert over bistandsbudsjettet i Utenriksdepartementet, og forvaltes av Norsk filminstitutt i samarbeid med Stiftelsen Festivalkontoret.

Synopsis: In Gaza, Suleiman mourns his sister Noreen. He rebuilds a bird cage on the spot where she was killed. Suleiman then rescues a falcon and uses the cage to hide it. Hisham, a young man, demands the falcon, but Suleiman refuses. A Palestinian woman from Bulgaria also named Noreen arrives to study bird migration. Israeli soldiers destroy the falcon’s cage but it survives.
