Den amerikanske produsenten og manusforfatteren James Schamus kommer til Cinemateket for å holde et foredrag, melder Cinemateket.
James Schamus er direktør for Focus Features, han er Ang Lees faste produsent og har skrevet manus til flere av hans filmer, han er en av de mektigste og mest toneangivende personene i amerikansk film. Schamus er i tillegg professor i film på Columbia University, og ga i 2008 en hel bok om Carl Th. Dreyers film Gertrud (1964). Han er en lidenskapelig filmelsker og entusiast, og en usedvanlig kunnskapsrik, artikulert og engasjerende person.
Søndag 13. juni kan du oppleve ham live på Cinemateket. Han holder da foredraget «My Wife is a Terrorist: Lessons in Storytelling from the Department of Homeland Security»:
“The most powerful narrative factories today reside not in Hollywood but in places like Alexandria, Virginia, and Washington, D.C., and in the various unnameable suburbs of Maryland and Colorado and Georgia where hundreds of thousands of workers toil within America’s vast homeland-security bureaucracies, spying on the rest of us — and they have a lot to teach us about storytelling. For example, in November of 2008, the Department of Homeland Security published a two-page document entitled «Narrative,» virtually every line of which was redacted in bold black ink. The thesis of my talk will be that «Narrative» should be regarded by all storytellers and filmmakers as an instant classic of narrative theory. I do, however, have one advantage over other readers of «Narrative,» in that I know, or suspect I know, that it tells a story about my wife, the novelist and peace activist Nancy Kricorian. And to understand that story fully, we will need the help of, among others, Vladimir Pudovkin, Paul Greengrass, Jacques Derrida, Jenny Holzer, G.E. Anscombe, Michel Foucault, and, of course, Alfred Hitchcock” – James Schamus
