Manusforfatteren bak The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo – den amerikanske nyinnspillingen av Stieg Larssons bok Män som hatar kvinnor – avslører i et intervju med The Guardian at han fikk frie tøyler av produksjonsselskapet Sony.

Steven Zaillian forteller at studioet var klar over at grunnen til at serien har blitt så populær, er fordi den ikke tar noen snarveier rundt kontroversielle temaer:

Indeed, the studio, Sony, went further, embracing the problematic content and telling Fincher to build an adult franchise. Zaillian in turn was given carte blanche to go for it, with virtually no briefing. «There was really very little discussion, he recalls. It was, ‘Read the book, see what you think.’

På spørsmål om han har latt seg styre av bokseriens popularitet og tilstedeværelse i publikums bevissthet, svarer han «not a lot». Det handlet først og fremst om å fortelle historien på best mulig måte, og at det ikke var noe mål i seg selv å endre innholdet. Dette på tross av at et sentralt plot-element har blitt skrevet om:

I was simply trying to tell the story the best way I could, and push that out of my mind. I didn’t change anything just for the sake of changing it. There’s a lot right about the book, but that part, I thought we could do it a different way, and it could be a nice surprise for the people that have read it.»
